Hang Gliding Bursary Scheme

In an effort to keep the sport of Hang Gliding alive in Ireland (paragliders presently far outweigh hangies) the IHPA is offering to sponsor a small number of new students who take up the sport and remain active within the IHPA. To this end, the IHPA is willing to pay a significant part of the training fees on the following grounds:

The prospective student must:

  • Be resident in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Apply for sponsorship to the IHPA Training Officer before embarking on any training course.
  • Register with an IHPA approved school for their training. Contact the IHPA Training Officer for details.
  • Complete the training course (to Safe Pro 3 equivalency or above) and pass the end of course exam. Evidence will be required.
  • Maintain a training and flight log book (available from the IHPA Training & Flight Safety Officer) and log a minimum of 5 hours on their own intermediate glider here in Ireland.
  • Become, and undertake to remain, a full member of the IHPA during their active flying career.

Any lapse or failure to comply with the terms of the bursary scheme will result in disqualification to receive payment.

Payment under this bursary scheme will be made retrospectively once the above conditions have been fulfilled to the satisfaction of the IHPA Training & Flight Safety Officer. The intent is to encourage new pilots into the sport who are serious about becoming and remaining active pilots.
